Issaura’s Claws

Part II

Chapter 23

A Secret No More

The flaming projectile blasted past them by a hair’s breadth before it crashed; its incredible heat singed Lluava’s hair. Burok Dûr groaned under the impact, and the resulting tremor sent several large boulders tumbling down its sides. Varren grabbed Lluava’s arm and pulled her off the protruding lip of rock where they had been sitting. A second blazing ball careened towards them. Bits of rock whistled past their faces. The pair ran for cover as the once solid ground began to crack and crumble.

Lluava could not stop to consider how close they had come to a fiery death. The quiet night blared with noise. Continuous explosions competed with the screeching of Durog’s alarm. Screaming flocks of disrupted birds took wing, while shouts and cries echoed from the camp below.

Lluava’s senses were on high alert. Her ears rang from the bombardment of sound. Fires began to spread. As black smoke billowed around them, Varren and Lluava forced themselves toward the camp.

Running and coughing through the smoky gusts, the two of them startled several people desperately fighting flames encroaching on the woods. Following her partner, Lluava joined a throng of recruits forcing their way through the doors of the small coliseum. They entered the arena, and Varren strode up to the furious Merrow and Skipe. Standing as if born for this particular day, the grand master chief towered over them with fierce concentration and commanding focus. Varren quickly related what he had observed from the top of Burok Dûr, then he and Lluava took their seats with the rest of the recruits.

“Attention!” Colonel Skipe shouted. It needed only to be said once.

The grand master chief growled out, “Congratulations, all of you! This is your graduation day. You are no longer recruits; you are now soldiers in His Majesty Thor’s army. The sound you awakened to this morning was the sound of the Raiders’ catapults assaulting our seaside wall. Thankfully, Burok Dûr is our natural defense against such attacks.

“As of today, all of you will follow my commands precisely. You will do what I say, when I say it. Any hesitation could risk not only your own life but also the lives of those around you. Doubt and fear will not be tolerated. Is this clear?”

Voices rang out in unison, “Sir, yes, sir!”

“I regret to inform you that according to reports, both Calitron and Delphine have been breached by the attacks.”

The humans were distraught at this news; their partners tried to calm them as the grand master chief solemnly continued.

“I am sending a small band of elite soldiers from this camp to reconnoiter the area and to search for survivors. After dismissal, the following pairs will meet Colonel Skipe by Durog’s gates: Thadius Sihia II and Horus Ethril; Derrick Urbane and Trintan Brenders; Varren Mandrun and Lluava Kargen.”

Excitement and fear welled up within Lluava; her whole body trembled. She forced herself to pay attention.

“The rest of you have ten minutes to change into uniform, pack your weapons and gear, and line up with your troops in the courtyard, where you will receive your orders.
